president jammeh starts treatment for third batch of hiv/aids patients

17th April 2007:

The third batch of 38 HIV/Aids patients were on Tuesday screen at the Serrekunda Hospital to start President Yahya Jammeh's treatment at the Glass House in State House.

Addressing the patients shortly before the start of his herbal treatment, the Gambian leader told the patients that there is no discrimination as far as his treatment is concerned. He said during the course of his treatment, patients must not smoke, steal or have sex, saying even the couples in the treatment are not exempted from these conditions.

Dr Jammeh urged patients to be forthcoming on issues concerning their health, imploring on them not to be ashamed to replay the facts surrounding their conditions.

He informed them that they will not take any food from outside, other than what will be given to them by him. He also told them that they will not take any Western medicine, except for what will be administered to them by himself. He also urged the patients to refrain from eating coffee, attaya, as well as chewing kola-nut and chewing gum.

He told them that they will not be allowed to be tampered with by outsiders during the treatment. He therefore, cautioned them that whatever activity they do during the treatment, it will be discovered by him, as manifested in the previous treatments.

He stressed that these conditions will be applied to the latter, warning that if anyone is found wanting, the whole batch will be cautioned on the first and second violations. However, he maintained that the third violations of the condition will cost those involved with expulsion. “If you are not serious, we will kick you out and take in other patients. Remember that you have come for treatment, and the medication you hate is the most effective. If you comply with all these, we will be able to treat you,” he noted.

The President informed the patients that some of the patients in previous batch were cleared of HIV/Aids within the first-10 days, saying “there are different metabolic reactions to the treatment. It does not mean that those who did not recover quickly from the illness violated the rules. The longer the medicine stays in your body, the more effective it will become”.

President Jammeh also urged the patients to maintain peace amongst themselves and see each other as a family.

He said the HIV/Aids virus is easy to cure, saying what is more problematic is the opportunistic infections, like tuberculosis and diabetes. “What we are doing here is to get rid of the virus from your system. If someone has diabetes or TB, it is very difficult to get rid of the HIV virus. Where a person is suffering from TB and it is chronic, as you are fighting the HIV virus, the TB also fights the CD4 counts of that particular individual”.

The Gambian leader added that it has taken a long time before the third batch commence the treatment. He then elaborated: “We realise that these diseases were the things we over looked in the past and it created a lot of problems for the patients that were undergoing the treatment. Now, for anybody to come for the HIV/Aids treatment, we have to test him or her for all these diseases, so that we know how to start the treatment. The earlier you go for the HIV/Aids test and detected positive, and start the treatment, the easier it will be to get rid of the virus from your system.” President Jammeh reaffirmed that what kills is the opportunistic infections.

He said for foreigners who wish to be treated, they must get the consent of their governments, either through the embassies representing their governments or their foreign ministries. “If you don't have this, you cannot be treated. This does not mean that we are discriminating anybody but we must get confirmation first before anything.”

For his part, Dr Tamsir Mbowe, Secretary of State for Health and Social Welfare, said 107 patients were registered for the treatment but after series of laboratory and physical examinations, 38 were selected to start the treatment. “The others”, according to Dr Mbowe, will join the batch later. He then called on Gambians to go for voluntary counselling and testing. “This will help in the management of patients affected and infected with the virus,” he noted.

Global Challenges | Gambian President Claims To Cure HIV/AIDS, Prompts Concern Among Some Public Health Workers
[Feb 22, 2007]

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh since January has claimed that he can cure HIV/AIDS with an herbal remedy, prompting concern among some public health workers in Africa who already are "struggling against faith healers dispensing herbal remedies," the AP/Monterey County Herald reports. The treatment -- which is applied over several weeks -- involves application of a green paste, as well as application of a gray-colored solution splashed on the people's skin and drinking a yellowish tea-like liquid. In addition, Jammeh said people taking the treatment should refrain from drinking alcohol, tea and coffee; eating kola nuts; and having sex, the AP/Herald reports. The biggest concern among public health workers is that Jammeh asks HIV-positive people to stop taking antiretroviral drugs, which weakens their immune systems and makes them more prone to infections, according to Antonio Filipe, World Health Organization regional adviser in Senegal. Jammeh has sent blood samples from the first nine people who have taken his treatment to a laboratory in Senegal to be tested for HIV. According to a letter from the laboratory, four blood samples had undetectable viral loads, one had a moderate viral load and three had high viral loads. The technician who conducted the tests said the results are not conclusive because the individuals' viral loads were not tested before undergoing Jammeh's treatment. "There is no baseline ... you can't prove that someone has been cured of AIDS from just one data point," Coumba Toure Kane, head of the molecular biology unit at Senegal's Cheikh Anta Diop University, said, adding, "It's dishonest of the Gambian government to use our results in this way." Jammeh said, "Whatever you do, there are bound to be skeptics, but I can tell you my method is foolproof." He added that the treatment is "not an argument, [it] is proof. It's a declaration. I can cure AIDS and I will." Filipe said WHO respects Jammeh's views but added, "As the World Health Organization, we would like to state quite clearly" that "so far there is no cure for AIDS" (Callimachi, AP/Monterey County Herald, 2/21).

BANJUL, Gambia (CNN) -- At the only hospital in the capital of this tiny West African nation, a 3-year-old AIDS patient named Suleiman receives his daily dose of medication -- a murky brown concoction of seven herbs and spices served out of a bottle that once contained pancake syrup.

The boy is told a spoonful a day will make him better. His mother, Fatuma, takes the same concoction, as do several dozen other AIDS and HIV patients here. Adults take two spoonfuls.

"It's amazing," Fatuma says. "Two weeks ago, I was very ill, weak and couldn't eat without vomiting."

This has become the treatment for HIV/AIDS patients here since early January, when Gambian President Yahya Jammeh announced he had discovered a cure for the disease that has wreaked havoc across Africa. He made that announcement in front of a group of foreign diplomats, telling them the treatment was revealed to him by his ancestors in a dream.

His concoction has stirred controversy and anger among health officials who say the president's claims will bring false hope to the nation's more than 20,000 HIV/AIDS patients. They are also afraid that it could cause patients to stop taking the anti-retroviral drugs that have been proven to prolong life and improve quality of living.

One critic was Fadzai Gwaradzimba, the U.N. envoy to Gambia. She was abruptly kicked out of the country after saying on February 9 that patients should continue their normal treatment and that Jammeh's concoction be "assessed by an international team of experts."

"The U.N. system encourages all patients currently receiving anti-retroviral treatment to continue to comply with their recommended treatment regimens while the efficacy of the new treatment is being assessed," she said. (Read full statement)

The U.N. Development Program stands by the envoy's remarks. The World Health Organization has also been critical of Jammeh's treatment.

No formal medical training

Jammeh, 41, is a former army colonel who has no formal medical training. He wears white robes and carries a copy of the Quran with him in this mostly Muslim nation.

His degree is a high school diploma. But he claims his family has a history of healing people through traditional African medicine.

At the hospital in the capital, patients claim the president's concoction is making a difference to them.

Ousman Sow, 54, said he's been HIV-positive since 1996 and had been taking anti-retrovirals for the past fours years until he volunteered for this program.

Four weeks later, he said he's gained 30 pounds and feels like a new person.

"I am cured at this moment," he said.

Asked if he had any HIV symptoms, he responded, "No, I don't. As I stand before you I can honestly tell you I have ceased to have any HIV symptoms."

Patient after patient gave similar statements to CNN. But it was difficult to verify the authenticity of their testimony. The government claims to have scientific evidence, but it did not provide any to CNN.

Jammeh refused to speak to CNN for this report.

CNN also sought medical reports of the HIV/AIDS patients to see whether they are indeed on the mend. The material was not provided. The government would also not release the concoction to CNN for testing.

Gambian Health Minister Tamsim Mbowe, a trained physician with multiple medical degrees, defended the so-called herbal cure.

"I can swear, 100 percent, that this herbal medication His Excellency is using is working. It has the potency to treat and cure patients infected with the HIV-virus," he told CNN.

What does he have to say to skeptics?

"I will tell them, as a Western medical trained doctor with 13 years experience meeting different professors, meeting different colleagues of mine, I've seen His Excellency, my leader, coming up with herbal medications that are able to treat and cure patients with HIV-virus, which have been proven within all medical and laboratory parameters."

Health officials worldwide remain doubtful of these claims. Experts also say it's in places like Gambia that the poor and desperate will latch onto anything resembling hope.

"For a country's leader to come up with such an outlandish conclusion is not only irresponsible, but also very dangerous, and he should be reprimanded and stopped from proclaiming such nonsense," said Professor Jerry Coovadia of the University of Kwa Zulu Natal in South Africa.
