Robert J. Frascino is President and Founder of The Robert James Frascino AIDS Foundation. A Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, and the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Frascino has served as Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine, Division of Immunology, Rheumatology, and Allergy, at Stanford University Medical Center from 1983 until 2001. He is a member of the American Academy of HIV Medicine and has also been a distinguished member of the executive boards of numerous state and regional associations, including Past President of the California Society of Allergy, Asthma, and Clinical Immunology, the Allergy/Immunology Association of Northern California, and Past President of the Allergy, Asthma, Immunology Foundation of Northern California.
Dr. Frascino is the founder of two medical clinics devoted to the comprehensive and compassionate care of people living with HIV. As primary investigator in numerous HIV clinical trials, he has published articles on evolving new treatments and quality of life issues for people living with the virus in such journals as International Journal of STD and AIDS, Western Journal of Medicine, Journal of AIDS and Blood.
In 1991, while performing a routine medical procedure on a patient with HIV infection, Dr. Frascino sustained a hollow-bore needle stick and laceration, resulting in his seroconversion to HIV positive. He retired from his medical practice in 1996 to concentrate his efforts on AIDS awareness, fund raising and teaching.
Dr. Frascino completed his postdoctoral Clinical Immunology/Allergy Fellowship at the University of California in San Francisco. Prior to this, he served his internship and residency in Pediatrics at The Children's Hospital of Northern California and obtained his medical degree at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Dr. Frascino, an award-winning classical pianist, has performed a series of concerts entitled A Concerted Effort to benefit AIDS service organizations worldwide. His efforts to date have raised more than $850,000. Dr. Frascino is the recipient of the National Society of Fundraising Executives' 1997 Distinguished Honoree/Silicon Valley Philanthropy Award. In addition to raising funds and awareness to combat the epidemic, Dr. Frascino, the recipient of the Santa Clara County Medical Association's 1997 Award for "Outstanding Contribution in Medical Education," continues to teach and lecture extensively on various topics related to HIV/AIDS. In 1999, Dr. Frascino and Dr. Natterstad, his life partner, established The Robert James Frascino AIDS Foundation, a 501(c)(3) philanthropic organization whose sole mission is to provide crucial services for men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS and to raise awareness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic through advocacy and education. In May of 2002, as part of the International AIDS Candlelight Vigil in San Francisco, Dr. Frascino accepted the Bobbi Campbell AIDS Hero Award for which he received personal letters of acknowledgement and congratulations from both Governor Gray Davis and Mayor Willie Brown.
Dr. Frascino is the Forum Expert in the Forum on Anemia and Fatigue and the Forum on HIV Prevention and Safe Sex at The Body, an AIDS and HIV information resource Web site. He also participates in the speakers' bureaus and distinguished faculty programs for Glaxo-Wellcome, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Agouron Pharmaceuticals, DuPont Pharmaceuticals, Merck & Company, Roche, Serono, Abbott Laboratories, Ortho-Biotech and Bio-Technology Corporation. He has received research support from Roche, Chiron and Ortho-Biotech. He has served as a physician-advisor/consultant for Bayer Corporation, Agouron, Roche and Ortho-Biotech.
